Picture Book Review—Wide Awake Bear

Another Picture Book Review by Jean Matthew Hall

Pat Zietlow Miller’s Wide Awake Bear is illustrated beautifully by Jean Kim. It was published in 2018 by Harper Collins Publishers.

Baby Bear Elliot and his mama snuggle in for their winter-long nap. But only a short way through the nap Elliot awakes. He’s so excited about spring! No matter how hard he tries Elliot cannot go back to sleep.

He finally enlists his mama’s help with calming his fears, filling his tummy and getting back in the mood to snooze.

Wide Awake Bear is a lovely story of a loving relationship between mama and son. But it is also filled with little bits of information about the changing of the seasons—a topic dear to my heart.

My four-book series of picture books about the four seasons will debut in early 2019. And, like Elliot, I can hardly wait for them to appear.

Wide Awake Bear is a story of waiting and hoping and trusting that spring will come if we just relax and wait.
