BIRDS by Kevin Henke

Laura Dronzek again illustrates Kevin Henke’s picture book BIRDS. Greenwillow Press published it in 2009.

Henke’s illustrations are usually soft and pastel—almost like chalk paintings. Dronzek’s illustrations for this book are deep and rich, even if the colors are pastel. I know NOTHING about art, so I can’t tell which media the two of them use, but I can definitely see why the publisher chose Dronzek’s style for this book and for WHEN SPRING COMES.

BIRDS is, quite simply, a child’s observations about birds outside her window. Colors, sizes, and a few “what-ifs” fill the pages. The story ends on an unexpected note for me.

Actually, I am not as “satisfied” with the ending of this book as with the others I have read.

But it’s still a sweet story with lovely illustrations. Sure to be a hit with any young child who likes birds.
