Another nonfiction picture book review by Jean Matthew Hall.
It’s that wonderful time of year again—school restarts after summer break. I love it!
I peruse the aisles of department stores admiring the shiny new school supplies. I haven’t taught school for fourteen years, but I cannot resist the urge to stock up. Nostalgia.
I’ll be sharing reviews about several nonfiction picture books over the next few weeks. They’re not only wonderful for kids to read at home for pleasure, but great tools for teachers to use in classrooms.
Please share these posts with the teachers in your life. Thanks.
The Blue Whale was authored and illustrated by Jenni Desmond. Enchanted Lion Books published it in 2015. ISBN is 978-1-59270-165-0.
I love the first page of this book. “Once upon a time, a child took a book from a shelf and started to read.” Such a great invitation not only to this book, but to the world of books!
The text is filled with interesting information about blue whales. Anytime Desmond lets us in on a numerical fact she uses child-sized comparisons to illustrate it.
For instance: “A blue whale can measure up to 100 feet. That is the same length as a truck, a digger, a boat, a car, a bicycle, a motorcycle, a van, and a tractor—all lined up.”
She compares a blue whale’s weight to 55 hippopotami. It’s mouth is so big that 50 people could stand inside it. She fills one spread with 50 gallon jugs of milk to illustrate how much a whale calf drinks each day.
The kids (and students) in your life will not only enjoy this book, they’ll learn a thing or two along the way. You can find other Jenni Desmond books here.
HAPPY BACK-TO-SCHOOL TIME!
