515j4j7bvzl-_sx258_bo1204203200_The Witch’s Walking Stick by author/illustrator Susan Meddaugh was published by Houghton Mifflin in 2005. A list of some of Meddaugh’s picture books is at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt here.

Last week I talked about Meddaugh’s zany sense of humor. It really shines in this picture book, The Witch’s Walking Stick. I enjoyed the story of a destitute orphan who gets her comeuppance against her abusive brother and sister via the witch’s effort to take advantage of the little girl. I like that. Doing evil comes around to bite you in the rear, I agree.

I kept thinking that the little girl, Margaret, was the main character. But I was stumped as to how she changed or grew through the events of the picture book. True, she is her own heroine. But she didn’t really change. Her circumstances changed because of her actions. The other characters in the story changed because of her actions. So, I’m rethinking who the real main character is. You’ll have to read it to find out for yourself. That might make a great classroom discussion for you teachers of elementary literature or writing, too.

Again, the story is ridiculous. The turnabout ending is funny and satisfying. I like this little tale.
